GASTROMOTIVA
Saving Food and Resources
The heart of the project is located in Lapa district in Rio de Janeiro. Gastromotiva focuses on the distribution of free meals to those in need and offering free professional training courses in entrepreneurship and gastronomy, held by renowned Chefs of Brazil and the world. It is all about saving food and resource sustainability.
Gastromotiva was founded in 2006 by David Hertz, following the concept of Social Gastronomy. Today, the project has multiple gastronomic kitchens in Rio, Sao Paolo, Curitiba, Manaus, Salvador, Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Minas Gerais and Mexico City.
This project circles the goals 1,2,4,8,10,11,12,13,17 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in the sectors Human Development, Generating Income, Food Security and Climate & Environment.
More than 2.2 million people have been impacted through Social Gastronomy, the goal set for 2023 being 10 million. Over 5 million meals have been distributed, at least 8 thousand people trained and more than 337 tons of food saved from going to waste.
Supporting the project as a tourist is easy: for only 45R$ (ca. 7,40€ or 7,80$), guests will receive a full, three-course meal in the establishment in Rio de Janeiro: The restaurant offers dinner daily from Monday till Friday, prepared by trainees and served in a welcoming environment. For every meal that is bought, a free meal can be provided for people in vulnerable positions.
Guests can also benefit from the different tours and tastings, as well as the workshops on sustainability and cooking skills that are offered.
